The economy may finally be affecting one of our family. Grandson Jack said they are going to have some lay-offs where he works in Electra, TX, but he does not know if he will be one of the unlucky ones. He has been there 2 1/2 years, and there are only 2 doing the job he does, so he has hopes he will get to stay. This is Jack with Harold and me taken last fall (2008.) So far we have been fortunate enough to have all immediate family members in stable job positions.

Sunshine expects to return to work the first of March after recovering from surgery.

Bowling Balls and Chicken Vests

This post falls under the heading of "News you may have Missed." David stopped by this morning with news he heard on the radio. A thief broke into a bowling alley and stole 150 of 151 bowling balls. What on earth could someone do with 150 bowling balls, and why leave just one? Can't you just see someone sidling up to a person on the street, looking all around, then flipping the coat open and saying, "Wanta buy a bowling ball cheap?"

The other tidbit he heard was that a lady heard that when hens stop laying eggs they are killed for meat. Being soft hearted she started buying them and giving them a home. At present she has over a thousand hens to care for. This in itself wouldn't be so bad, but she is also knitting vests for them. So far, she has knitted 1,500 chicken vests. Is this world full of nutty people or what!!!

Enter first nut: "Wanta buy a bowling ball with its own chicken vest?"

Wish I knew where these events took place, but David didn't remember so I can't pass it on. The cartoon was in an email I received a few days ago. I notice the hen at the fence is not wearing a vest, poor thing.

As long as we have something to laugh about we will all be healthier. You know, Laughter is the Best Medicine! Just learned the bowling ball story came from Paul Harvey News.

Happy Valentine's Day

Wishing a happy day on this Feb. 14th. Enjoy the vintage Valentines from the collection at Tipnut. com. These are the kind that were exchanged back in the 1940's. You know, the "good ole days." Oops, copied one of them twice, and missed one. Oh, well, nobody's perfect here on this earth.

Sunshine came over for a little bit this morning and reading the first blog entry, she said she needed an amendment on the part about her and Michael. When they married (September 11, '93) the optimists said they might make it 6 months, and the pessimists said they would kill each other. Her words were the same as mine--we showed 'em! They will celebrate (?) 16 years this next September.

From Red Skelton on a happy marriage: "Go out to dinner once a week. Have a nice steak, an adult beverage, and good companionship. You go on Tuesdays and the wife goes on Thursdays."

Friday the 13th

We have a saying in our family---What comes after Friday the 13th? SATURDAY THE 14 TH!!

It's an old movie spoof on the Friday the 13th movies starring Richard Benjamin, and is too funny to be scary. We used to watch it as a family group, and nearly knew all the dialogue, but the past few years we have gradually given up the habit. After Patti and Randy moved to Amarillo, we just started missing out on it. They are back here now, so maybe we will drag it out and watch it again. Oh, I did call her a while ago and warned her to be very, very careful tomorrow, it's Saturday the 14th, cracked her up.

We are having chilly and windy days now, but at least not freezing like it was for so long. Maybe spring is almost here. Reminds me, I got a picture from the internet called "Winter's almost Over, Spring is almost here. Hope it gives you all a smile.

Here's a thought to ponder: In these days of inflation, if you go shopping and don't find what you want, be grateful.

Grass Fire

Happened yesterday. Patti took me to the grocery store across the river in TX, and coming home we saw a burned off section between the highway and the railroad tracks. The local fire dept. was still there but had put out most of the blaze. Just a few smoky spots left. It happened between the time we went and returned. My grand daughter's husband is on the volunteer fire fighters crew, so we waved as we went by---not allowed to stop. The highway patrol was keeping traffic moving, slowly. We seem to be starting wildfires early this year, but have had no measurable rainfall in a couple of months so shouldn't be surprised.
Tornado watches out to the north and east of us this evening also. There was one reported up near OK City earlier, but don't know how serious it was. Guess weather happens.

Is it too soon to say keep cool?

Jessica and Jack's Anniversary

They were married on Ground Hogs Day in Georgia while still in the Army, 3 years ago. Jess called a couple of evenings ago, and said Jack took her out for dinner to celebrate and had a great time. They have a baby girl who is 7 months old and looks just like her Dad. She was born on June 27. My birthday is June 29. Why could she not have waited 2 more days? Guess we can still celebrate together.

They are living in Lake Charles so the lucky things have missed out on all this cold weather. They are still living with Jack's Mother, but hope to have a place of their own soon.

I still remember what Red Skelton said about marriage, at least one of the things he said: "We hold hands when we go anywhere. If I let go, she shops."

Hang on, Jack!

Sunshine update

Sunshine (grand-daughter) had surgery two weeks ago, and when I called today she said she is doing well. She expects to learn Thursday when she can go back to work. Maybe next week. This is her and her youngest, Harley.

The family in Kentucky are all ok. Bob had his carport collapse from the weight of all the snow with 2 trucks inside, just after he went out of it and inside to get a coat. Close call!!!! He says the worst of the storm went south of them. All this snow and ice are likely to cause flooding of the Ohio River when it melts.

Snow in Kentucky

Brother Bob lives near Henderson, KY and we have not been able to contact him or my niece or nephews who also live in and near Henderson. Last I heard there are still massive power outages and roads blocked by downed limbs and power lines. The National Guard are on the job helping to clear things up and find those who are stranded and isolated. It hits close to home when it is family involved. After this disaster they all may decide to move back to Florida!

We moved furniture around today (again!!!) and my dog Pepper is still upset. She hates to have anything changed in her little world. She will be 17 years old on the 8th of this month. Isn't she cute?

Ernie J. Zelinski said: "Only the foolish and dead don't change." Sorry Pepper.
